Fewer kids hurt on the stairs, but still a danger
    Published March 12, 2012

    http://www.foxnews.com/health/2012/03/12/fewer-kids-hurt-on-stairs-but-still-danger/

This article is about kids ages 5 and below get hurt on the stairs. The main reason why they get hurt is because the parents don’t supervise them when they start climbing the stairs or there doing something and the kid wonders off. Another reason is if there playing with a tricycle. Some kids find the stairs a place of fun but they really don’t know its dangerous. Every 6 minutes in the U.S there’s a kid in the emergency room because of a related stair injury. "We should build environments where we know children will live or visit so that they're safe for children,"

Its important for the safety of the kids. Its an issue because parents should pay more attention or put gates on the bottom and top of the stairs. Its interesting because kids under 5 are getting hurt because of careless parents.

  2. California Fish Market Worker Shoots Owners, 1 Dies. March 12, 2012 http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/calif-fish-market-worker-shoots-owners-dies-15901857

This article is about an employee at a local fish market in California shooting the owners, killing the wife, and severely wounding the husband. The sergeant says that this shooting was followed after a dispute between the owners and the employee. The employees name is still with held along with the information on what the dispute was about. But all in all, this shooting should not have happened.

This is important because business owners should really be very careful and serious about the employees they decide to hire. This employee clearly had some personal problems to take care of and should not be working in an innocent fish market. Although nobody knows what cause this person to do this yet, these innocent owners should not have been shot like that especially the wife who didn't get to live.

U.S soldiers accused of Afghan killing spree
An American soldier went house to house shooting spree in 2 villages in southern Afghanistan Sunday morning. He killed 16 people in what the Afghanistan president called an “unforgivable” crime. The soldier turned himself in after he opened fire on the civilians. This attack is going to anger the international forces following deadly riots over the burning Qurans by U.S troops.
This is important because we don’t want to anger the Afghan people and make them not trust us. The article is interesting because there was no reason for one of our troops to go around to houses injuring and killing innocent civilian people.

  4. Jessica Ryen Doyle. "Teen-produced radio show documents effects on bullying" Fox News on the web. March 12, 2012.March 12, 2012.

This article was about bullying and a radio show that talks about bullying cases. A girl named Council who lives in Hartford, Connecticut was being bullied by other girls telling her she wasn't pretty and needed a makeover so she skipped a grade because of them. Unfortunately, the older kids weren't any nicer to her. Council went on the radio show called "Bullied: Teen Stories from Generation PRX" which deals with youth bullying. Many bullying problems are never told like Jennifer Hartstein said "bullying often goes unreported, said Jennifer Hartstein, a child and adolescent psychologist with a private practice in New York City."

This article is important because many people are being bullied and people need to do something about it, not just get the bully because the bully could do it again. It demonstrates an issue because some people get bullied either physically or verbally and those words or actions does hurt the person who gets bullied and like the article said some people even commit suicide because of it. This article is an interesting development because people like Jake Shapiro, CEO of the radio show, saw that bullying was rising in the media so he thought that young people's voices should be heard and now the radio show is on a lot of different radio stations across the country. This article was interesting because finally people can tell their bullying cases and have people do something about it and not just keep it bottled up.

MLA Citaton: CNN Wire Staff, Taliban vow revenge for U.S. soldier’s shooting rampage, CNN, 10:19 AM EDT MON March 12, 2012, http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/12/world/asia/afghanistan-shooting/index.html?hpt=hp_t1#

On Sunday, an American soldier was accused of going on a “house-to-house shooting rampage” and allegedly killed 16 civilians. Now the Afghan Taliban has vowed to avenge their fellow citizens. The soldier has been “accused of killing nine children, three women, and four men,” and has also been asked to be put on trial. The group will apparently administer an amercement towards the soldier’s crude ways. The civilians who live in the village that has been attacked are now angry, and worst of all, scared. They feel that they have not been protected in any way. The soldier later turned himself in and admitted that he had executed the task on his own. His “mental stability and medical history are among the things the investigators are looking at.” Anyone responsible is said to be held accountable, but as of right now, this lone soldier is the only one willing to come forward and admit the truth about him, yet he refuses to say who else has been involved.
This is substantial because it has caused issues with the Afghan Taliban and their trust in the United States and the American soldiers. The towns now also feel threatened and the leaders fear that a rebellion may start. This exhibits concern because both the American soldiers and the leaders of Afghanistan are being blamed and the villages do not know whom they should be mad at. This is an interesting development because it shows that not all of the American soldiers may be trusted and the United States government should look more into their mental stability and past health. This article was interesting because it did not just express one person’s point of view but many others and did not seem to be an extremely biased article.

With the 2012 Presidential Elections coming up in November, President Barack Obama is looking for a victory claiming his 2nd term as President. Whether or not he gets re-elected is a big topic as Obama has many citizens infuriated with him. Reports show that the majority of Americans disapprove on how he is handling the economy and it’s a record number. Gas prices are soaring through the roof and 50 % of Americans are against Obama with 59% gave the President negative remarks regarding the Am. Economy. A record low 14% of Americans “strongly approve” of what Obama is doing about it.
Gas prices are something that affects Americans everyday lives. We use oil for our cars, homes, transportation, etc. We can’t afford to have to pay over $4.00 for our cars to work for a living. The situation needs to be addressed in a way where it is more affordable. Whether or not Obama gets re elected or not is up in the air. Obama took the job of the presidency with a full plate but his need of spending more in more money that we do not have will put us in the gutters. The next couple of months are essential for his re election because the majority of Americans are fed up.

  7. Brad Lendon. “Magnetic stress relievers called health danger for kids”. CNN Health 9 March. 2012. 9 March. 2012 http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/03/09/magnetic-stress-relievers-called-health-danger-for-kids/?hpt=he_c2

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has officially declared that magnetic stress relievers (for adults) are a huge safety risk for children. A 12-year-old girl from Australia had a torn bowel in four different places after swallowing five magnetic relievers. Theses magnets are the size of peas, but they are extremely powerful, and in some cases harmful. Safety commission Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said, “We want parents to be aware of the danger associated with these innocent-looking magnets.” These stress relievers (sold under the brand name “Bucky balls”) are now being sold with evident warnings on the back stating just how dangerous they can be to children.

This article is very important because these “stress relievers” are really dangerous for children. Since the Bucky Balls are so tiny, kids think it’s ok to put in their mouths. Parents aren’t really aware of this problem because the relievers seem harmless. If there isn’t more attention paid to this issue then many more children will end up swallowing them and then they will have to suffer serious consequences. Parents need to pay more attention to what it is that they are buying, and how it could ultimately affect their child.

War drums from Iran and Israel drown out rich past

srael is threatening Iran to stop obtaining nuclear weapons. Iran says that the nuclear weapons are for peaceful purposes and that they will attack anyone who gets in the way of their research. But Iran and Israel haven't always been enemies. They had a rich relationship that was there even thousands of years back.In the historical memories Iran was mentioned in a positive way. It was considered a good country to Israel this risk of them fighting could be the end of their relationship that they have shared for thousands of years. This is a big deal even for america because if Israel gets into a fight with Iran, then american will get involved. And other countries around the world may see it as a chance for business for their weapons. Which would only add gasoline to the fire. So making sure that Israel and Iran keep peace with each other is important not for them and their relationship that was there even thousands of years ago, but for the whole world to be at peace.

  9. By the CNN Wire Staff "Taliban vow revenge for U.S. soldier's shooting rampage" CNN March 12, 2012

The Taliban are angry at both Americans and Afghanistan security forces because of the killing of 16 civilians by an American soldier who went on a house-to-house shooting rampage Sunday in two villages near his military base in Kabul, Afghanistan. Afghanistan's parliament demands a public trial of the suspect, who is being accused of killing nine children, four men, and three women. The Taliban called U.S. forces "sick-minded American savages." and the actions were "barbaric." U.S. officials are both shocked and sad about the attack and Afghan President Hamid Karzai called the attack an "unforgivable" crime. Villagers of the area are claiming that the security forces of Afghanistan failed to protect them. The people in the villages have a conception that Americans are going to kill them while in their home because they're unsecured. The soldier turned himself in and is in U.S. custody with investigators questioning him. President Obama called killings "tragic and shocking" and apologized through phone to the Afghan President. People in Afghanistan are still angry.
This is important because it shows that everyone is capable of being unjust and doing crimes like this. Innocent civilians should not be killed in war whatsoever. People in Afghanistan have a right to be angry about this. Things like this happen all the time.

On Monday, the Afghan Taliban swore for revenge for the US of killing 16 civilians. Sunday an American soldier went on a shooting rampage in two villages near his base. Afghanistan’s parliament demanded a public trial for the suspect, who is accused of killing nine children, four men, and 3 women. They also said “We strongly request the government of America to punish this wild act and a have public trial in front of the people of Afghanistan.” US officials were shocked at this action and the Afghan president called it an “unforgivable” crime. The Taliban also called the US forces “sick-minded American savages,” in an online statement, also saying the group would mete out punishment for the “barbaric actions.” People in the area of the killings are angry at both the Americans and the Afghan security forces, who they accused of failing to protect them.

This article is very important because if the US officials don’t do something our country could be in grave danger due to the actions of one soldier. The Taliban are blaming the entire US Military for the actions of one sick-minded soldier. The article is very interesting because it keeps you concerned. The person that did these actions should most definitely be punished as a single person, but not the entire US Military and even more so the United States in general.

The article is basically about Angelina Jolie getting involved in the Kony debate. She has traveled to Uganda and condo and been to the international criminal court. She wants him put to jail. If you don’t now the Kony story here’s a little fill in. Joseph Kony abducted children as child soldiers and child sex –slaves and the fact that a big star like Angelina Jolie is taking a stand to this means it is a big deal

It is important because what they are doing to kids is wrong it shows that Kony needs to be arrested for his crime. This is an interesting article because its amazing how a man can have the heart to abduct children and use them as sex slaves and soldiers. Its sick and he needs to be punished.

For years there has been a debate on whether or not pitchers should be able to throw curveballs due contorting elbows, which put too much strain on the tendons in your hand. As there has been more and more research put into the topic, debates have become more tough and puzzling. Studies have shown that throwing too many of the same kind of pitch is a great threat to your hand that will turn into an injury soon enough. With proper mechanics the force needed to throw a curveball is no different than a fastball. Most kids usually do not have the proper mechanics or neuromuscular control over the ball. This study is helping young pitchers realize the dangers of throwing curve balls due to effects on the tendons in the hand. Kids in little league from ages 9 to 12 are getting surgery due to the effects and that may stop there careers from progressing on to high school and college.

  13. Modern children's books help families explore diversity

Children’s books have meaning to adults, not just children. They look to these books to solve problems or to get help with parenting as well as kids learning how to deal with moving or friendships. There are now books that include same sex marriages, single parents, or interracial families and they reflect the reality of this world. Todd Parr says “’The Family Book’ shows all the families on my block and beyond, and portrays them as different in appearance but equal and loving and kind.” Children have a better understanding of the world and so do parents.

This is important because children should have open minds, and they should understand the different aspects of the world. There are many different options out there. Some parents believe that books written with diversity is bad, or they don’t want their children exposed to that type of stuff but that’s just reality. Parents need to realize that their children will one day figure all this out. Many people don’t realize the messages in children’s books, there is a lot more than just stories.

The article is basically about the idea that LSD an hallucinogenic drug could help alcoholics give up drinking. LSD works by blocking a chemical in the brain, serotonin that controls functions including perception, behavior, hunger and mood. Patients taking LSD had a 59% reduce level of alcohol misuse compared to the 38% that didn’t take the drug.

It is important because its hard for struggling addicts to get clean and if this is a way for them to get clean then it’s a genius idea. This is not an issue I think this is a good, positive way unless the patients become addicted to the LSD then more problems will arouse. "This is probably as good as anything we've got [for treating alcoholism]."

Peyton as limited time on to decide where he is going to play this season he is going to meet with the Miami Dolphins soon and Tennessee wants him to come also

  16. Six dead in car bomb attack at Nigeria church

On Sunday March 11, 2012 a car bombing killing 6 people outside a catholic church in Nigeria. Ishaya Pam, the director of a near by hospital stated that there were 14 people involved in the bombing. He also said that 3 people were pronounced dead at the scene. After a bombing young people in Nigeria took over a roadblock near the church to talk at an official named Jang. Jang said “This is an unfortunate situation and we will do all we can to prevent future occurrences." But this had been the second bombing in two weeks and the people were very unhappy.

This is important because it raises awareness about the instability of the eastern nations and will most likely get more people involved in helping them. The current event demonstrates an issue because people are being hurt and or killed in Nigeria. It is an interesting current event because the bombing happened near a Catholic Church.

Gas prices are a big issue to many Americans and this article ties in politics along with it. Some people say gas prices reflect a president’s popularity or effectiveness and while it may be somewhat true there is a side not usually told in an instance. Such as how speculators drive the prices up, foreign nations raise or lower prices, and corporations raise prices for their own gain in profit. And this article seems one sided to me because it is not explaining several other factors.
This is an important issue to me and other people because I see it as a bias article out to make gas prices a deciding issue. I think that we should allow the free market to dictate prices and not governments or speculators.

  18. An American soldier recently went on a "shooting rampage" in Afganistan. Citizens of Afganistan are aggravated with both the American soldiers and Afganistan soldiers for not protecting them. The American soldier killed four men, three women, and nine children. "The attack does not represent the American character of our military".
This is important because the war on terror is a common conflict among the citizens of the United States. Our soldiers are not known to do these kind of things and just by this one cruel act by a single man, our military could now be known to do these kind of things. This is a very negative thing, but we should not even be in the war anymore.

The Taliban vow revenge on American soldiers after they allegedly shot and killed 16 civilians and burned their bodies. It was “An assault that has fueled anger still simmering after U.S. troops burned Qurans last month”. U.S forces have raised security since the incident on Sunday in Kandahar in fear of revenge attacks. American citizens that are currently living in Afghanistan have been warned about the possibility of future revenge attacks. The Taliban also take responsibility of several other attacks last month. They are also turning against their apparent allies causing the fate of 6 U.S soldiers in their violent protests.
This is an important event because it poses a threat towards the American soldiers stationed in Afghanistan. Even though it does not look like the Taliban will start a major riot like what happened when the Qurans were burnt we cant tell this re lit the fire from the conflict about the Qurans. After the events that could occur now such as riots and attacks are thought about the attention is turned to the greater distrust of washing ton and Kabul which causes questions about why American troops are still fighting in Afghanistan in a conflict about killing Osama bin Laden after 10 years. Also was this really American soldiers. This has not been found out yet.

The 38-year-old soldier has killed 16 Afghans without any order to or reason. This isn’t the first time in history that a soldier has killed civilians. The soldier might have posttraumatic stress disorder because he’s been around all of the shootings and other tragedies of the war. "They were afraid no one would believe them if they told somebody. That they'd be ostracized (socially excluded) for having another man touch them." The boys did not want to start conflict in the center, because it provided them food, clothing, shelter, and an opportunity of education.

Apple unveiled the new ipad last week and it features higher-resolution, slightly tweaked processor, 4G LTE connections and a better camera. This is really important because if you ever want to get a ipad or a new ipad, this is what you would be getting. This is an issue because the new ipads should not take 3 days to ship. This actually really unbelieveable because not every ipad takes 3 or more days to ship.

    Article: Everyday health

There are many reasons for you to get arthritis and here and 7 new unexpected factors. This is important because now you know many other reasons to stay away from if you don’t want arthritis. Even though arthritis is sometimes genetically given to offspring these facts might make it worse. When wearing stilettos women increase pressure on their knee caps witch increase the risk of arthritis in your knee caps. Constantly texting and your feeling your thumbs get crackly and start hurting all that texting is the cause witch causes arthritis in your thumbs. When you break a bone its more likely you are going to get arthritis in that area. Decaffeinated coffee and regular tea gives you the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis. The knee is very venerable to injury because it is surrounded by a lot of soft tissue and wearing your knees out may lead to arthritis. This demonstrates an issue because there are many reasons people don’t know that could give you the risk if arthritis. This article is interesting because it lets you know what to stay away from if you don’t want arthritis.

More then 50 students from North Shore Hebrew Academy High School are going to Poland and Israel for 2 weeks in April to remember Holocaust Memorial Day. ABout 46,000 camp survivors are in the United States and 10 to 15 percent die each year.

In Phoenix a light flashed at night with no explanation. It was caught on a traffic camera and "It's a mystery to us as well. I can't even offer a guess," said Doug Nintzel. The weather and electric utilities have no reason for why this happened.

This article is important because in 1997 people saw lights in a V-formation over Phoenix that caused calls for a government investigation. It was interesting because there are many debated on if aliens are real. Unexplained lights will definitely cause some extra terrestrial talk, especially in a place where something similar occurred almost 15 years ago.

This article is about 4 people who were shot at a home in Lamoine, Maine. Out of the 4 men shot, 1 died, Sinclair, and the other 3 were only injured. The shootings took place at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday at the home of Carter and Tacy Mullins. “A fifth man also was at the house at the time was not injured.” said police. Maine records about 24 homicides per year.

I think this is important because it shows even in some rural parts of the US it is possible to kill and it not be a big deal. It said in the article that the violence did not shake the community. People would drive by the house to get a look but no one was truly upset. They did not care because it did not effect them. It demonstrates that people are caring less and less about each other.

Texas tried to pass a law requiring voters to show photo identification at voting polls. The justice department said that the rule would vastly suppress turnout among eligible Hispanic voters. This decision follows a similar one made in South Carolina in December. “Even using the data most favorable to the state, Hispanics disproportionately lack either a driver’s license or a personal identification card,” Mr. Perez wrote, “and that disparity is statistically significant.”
This is important because the constitution says all citizens have a right to vote but because many eligible hispanic voters lack photo identification such as a drivers license it would be discriminatory to them to pass that law. This is an interesting development because my hispanic people that immigrate to this country come in through Texas and it would greatly surpress their vote. This is important also because "under the Voting Rights Act certain laws that have a history of suppressing minority voting like in Texas must show that any change to voting rules would not have a disproportionate impact on minority voters."

The Clark County School District rolled out a raking system for its elementary school and middle schools. In their point of view ,it should prove that it is a good tool to improve students achievements. The school were scored based on variety of indicators, then the schools were given one to five stars based on the result of score. The school got hight score is beneficial by giving the greatest freedom in how they work, the school with lowest score will be given more help. But many teachers have complains that the system put an emphasis on competition between schools and it will bring low morale at low-star schools.

Children are the future of nation , we are focusing the recent situation of education and determining new policy that helps or not. The rolling of a five-stat system made many different opinions , many are concerned about the system , also many are confident , only one thing that we are sure is no ranking system is perfect.Remember the purpose of ranking system is to push students to get improvements and encourage teachers and schools. We won’t know the result until it shows its effect of students. But for now , teachers, schools ,parents, and students should support the plan to seek for improvements.

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/12/us/afghanistan-shootings-base/index.html?hpt=hp_c1
This article is about how a U.S soldier from the Washington base had killed 16 Afghan Civilians in a house-to-house shooting rampage. A lot of soldiers throughout the past few years have been accused of similar situations where the soldiers had killed innocent civilians. The Taliban have vowed revenge in return for what the U.s army has done to these civilians of Afghanistan. The soldier who has been accused of these actions against the civilians turned himself in and the situation is still under investigation. Similar actions happened in 2010 and the squads were nicknamed the “kill squad”.
This is important because this is a huge investigation because innocent people had died Sunday and the suspect is a U.S soldier. This demonstrates an issue because it is not right to hurt innocent people just because they live in Afghanistan. This also is an issue because now the Taliban are seeking revenge on the U.S and now they have to be alert because now the people of the U.S could be unsafe. This is interesting because it is a very surprising story to hear about and it is very sad to hear about the deaths of these people. Afghanistan is a very dangerous place and all these stories are really sad to hear about.

Since Parents kids were young they never wanted them to throw curveballs. The reason for this was contorting elbows. The curveballs put more strain on the joint which may end up in needing surgery or not being able to throw a baseball ever again. Now a recent major study shows curveballs are no greater risk than that of other pitches and many studies lately have shown that the greatest risk to young arms is not throwing curves but making too many pitches of any kind.
This article is relevant to me because I am a sophomore in high school and pitch for varsity and sometimes we may have to pitch more then 100 Pitches in one game. Sometimes it may put a lot of strain and pain in my arm. One thing is that if anyone’s arm hurts from pitching or throwing something stop and when you go to bed, Ice where it hurts. From past experiences my family and me have noticed that this is the easiest way to help my arm. This article brought a lot of attention to me and I hope it does to you too.

This explains how the development of humanity has gone from good to decent to just horrible. I find it interesting because you would think that people would know that this isn't right and of course, they go ahead and do it anyways. Of those 11 bodies, four of them were young girls under the age of 6. He returned to base and is being charged by the military justice system. Some of the wounded people were rescued by helicopters and were brought to medical aid.

This is important because if a man from another country’s army murdered several innocent Americans, we would probably retaliate. It was interesting because its really surprising thinking that someone from our own army would act in such way.

He broke into homes and killed girls younger then 6 years old. After killing these people he would set the houses or buildings on fire. “The man gathered 11 bodies, including those of 4 girls younger than 6, and set fire to them, villagers said.”

The reason why this could be an issue is causing more problems with someone that already does not agree with our beliefs can cause extremely bad circumstances and bring us even farther away from becoming friendly with these types of country’s. This newest form of the iPad features a higher-resolution display, a slightly tweaked processor, a 4G LTE connection, and a better camera then the other forms of the iPad. With the kind of advertising that they show, make people that the iPad is not just a luxury item anymore it’s becoming a necessity item. The sales of the new iPad are skyrocketing like iPhone to the next.
This is important because this estimation of Apple selling 1 million iPad will stimulate the Apple company, the buying of all these iPad will help stimulate the economy a little bit. This is an interesting development because according to Gene Munster 1 out of every 7,000 people in the world are going to buy the newest form of this iPad. “Kony 2012” video from the invisible children charity is an issue that recently has been let out and talked about all over the world. Joseph Kony, part of the LRA, goes around in Uganda and other places in Africa and abducts children. He makes them kill their parents and kill others. He has abducted thousands of children. This has been going on for more than 2 decades. Jacob Acaye, who was in the Kony 2012 video as a little boy is now 21 years old and revisited the village to talk about how he and his brother was abducted. "Whenever a brother is in a problem, whenever anybody is in a problem, it should get the attention of everyone in the world.
It has been going on for the last 26 years. It shows that we are failing to solve it. And if there are any means that someone can help and it goes to end, then why not Americans get involved. For me the criticism [of "Kony 2012"] is unfair, because if I am to say it is fair then I wouldn't be here. Right now I wouldn't have been able to go to school. You wouldn't have been able to speak to me right now because I had no hope in my life. I reached even a point when I said, 'I can even die now' because I thought it would be the immediate resolution of my suffering, you know." Said Jacob. Jacobs hometown is Koro. The LRA invaded Koro in the middle of the night smashing down the doors of the hut he was in. Jacob told that the LRA had took 40 children that night.
This is an issue in life now. Even though its been 26 years of Kony doing this, he’s still continuing and if it is still happening people need to step it and try and make it stop. Americans need to get involved. So many people are getting hurt over this and its not a way to live life. Its an issue to people in Uganda, Africa. Its life or dealth. Joseph Kony needs to be stopped. Invisible Children are trying to do everything they can.

This week I chose to read the article Electronic pet doors for the 21st century pet. The article was about the new invention of the electrical pet door. You will no longer have to worry about letting your pets in and out or strange animals getting into your home. With the ultrasound collar the door will automatically open when your pet approaches it. Also if you would like your pet to only go out at certain times, the door has built-in controls that you can set.
This article is important because the electrical pet door is very convenient for both the owner and their pet. Their pets won’t have to wait for their owners to open the door, which will prevent them from having accidents in the house. Also this invention is great for potty training a new pet, when their owner is a work or has to go out somewhere. Even if the owner isn’t training a new pet their older pets shouldn’t have a problem learning how to use the new door.

This article is about James Cameron the producer of titanic and avatar. Cameron has created a capsule to travel into the depth of the sea, and broke the world record by a mile for modern vehicles. He plans to travel in the Challenger Deep in the pacific, this is dangerous and two of his work members already had a fatal accident. Cameron plans on taking samples of organisms and microorganisms in the depth of the sea.
This is important because it could help us explore new things and organisms. There is no issue involving this but in the future could help us solve an issue or problem. It’s interesting because the organisms survive in the depth of the ocean with little or no sunlight. Also no one has ever traveled this far, or taken samples.
