Joblessness Taking a Toll in America

The low number of jobs in the United States is really taking a toll on U.S. citizens. The rate of lost jobs is bad and increasing to worsen as indicated in Newsday. New economic plans have gave hope to avoid a new recession. “The U.S. economy has gathered steam in the second half of the year, expanding at a 2 percent annual rate in the third quarter. It could accelerate in the fourth quarter,” was a quote in Newsday and it shows what hope is given to the hopeful new economy. Claims have been continued to fall to 3.65 million from a previously recorded 3.69 million jobs.

  2. Sen. McCain: LI 'regrettably' part of U.S.
John mcCain said "Last I checked, Long Island was a part albeit sometimes regrettably part of the United States of America". This angered the New York state senator.McCain made the comment in reference to a Supreme Court case on permanent military detentions of Americans accused of terrorism but the joke was not taken lightly by the senator. Senator Charles Schumer responded by tweeting All of America saw how heroic Long Islanders were on 9/11. #LongIsland deserves an apology,". I chose this article because I think Senator Charles Schumer is right and that Long Island deserves an apology from McCain and that the joke was not funny.

10 HIV/AIDS Facts Everyone Should Know

December is the awareness month for HIV/AIDS and in this article it states how millions of people around the world are affected with HIV and later on with AIDS. I am very interested with this topic because it gives me the information on how to protect myself in the future. This article gives information on staying safe and how not to come in contact with the disease as well as giving information on recent methods on how to live longer with the disease. A passage from the article states:
“AIDS’ death toll is astronomic. Since the HIV/AIDS epidemic began in 1981 more than 30 million people worldwide have died from the disease including more than 600,000 in the U.S “
I feel that this article is really important to me because I don’t want to become affected with this disease – every 9 and half minutes one in five people become infected

Strong winds tear through western U.S.
There were many trees knocked down in California. A big storm had traveled through western U.S including California. This Storm had left millions of people powerless. And when there’s no power, there could be no water; no electricity for light, no television, no Internet and the food could go bad. This storm that had occurred could disrupt many peoples lives. This could make many people no work and a lot of houses had gotten destroyed. This could make a lot of people homeless. School had also closed down because of the storm. There were up to 100 MPH winds. Link :

  6. I didn't read this issue in a newspaper, it was actually brought up in my period 1 global class. I forget where exactly im pretty sure it was Pakistan or Afghanistan but a girl was raped by her cousin, and when she reported it she was put in jail for a 10 year sentence. they arrested her because it's against the law to wonder the streets without a male family member if you are a women. She got pregnant and had he baby, after 3 years of being in jail her sentence was cut short and she is allowed to go back to her town. Since the baby is out of wedlock she either has to marry her cousin or be a social outcast, risking being beaten or killed by the people of her village. I chose this issue because it's unfathomable to imagine a world where you should be afraid to tell authorities if you were abused.

    http://articles.cnn.com/2011-03-18/world/syria.riots_1_demonstrators-syrian-government-syrian-authorities?_s=PM:WORLD

Syrian authorities used lethal force against peaceful demonstrators, which led to many uprising riots through out Syria and led to the capital Damascus. The U.N. declared it “unacceptable” said by the Secretary-General. People blame the government for not listening to the people’s demonstrations but instead acted with violence. The US government is trying to convince Syria to have its peaceful demonstrations without violence and those who were involved in using lethal force should not get away with it.
If this is not handled with care many people can be injured or even killed. Also this could just be a possible start for a civil war. If it does become a matter of a civil war, the UN might have to get involved or possibly the US government might. This article is very interesting because unfortunately many people who practice peacefully received violence, which led to many deaths and injuries. Those who involved in using lethal force should be punished for the actions and what they might of started.
